Tributes pour in for Hassan Ariff


 Tributes poured in today for AF Hassan Ariff, an adviser to the interim government, who passed away at a Dhaka hospital today at the age of 83.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressing condolences said, "I am deeply shocked at his sudden demise. Adviser Hassan Ariff was a top lawyer who played a very significant role in the interim government."


The chief adviser, who learnt the news of Hassan's demise as soon as he landed in Dhaka from Dubai, also paid rich tribute to Hassan Ariff's decades-long public service, including his time as a former adviser of a caretaker government and an attorney general of the country.

"He will be remembered as a brilliant lawyer and for his legal activism and defending human rights of dissidents, dissenting voices, and the marginalised people of our society."

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep shock at the demise of the adviser and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.

A press release issued by the Supreme Court said AF Hassan Ariff served as the attorney general of Bangladesh from October 2001 to April 2005, and was in charge of the adviser of the ministries of land and civil aviation and tourism.

In separate messages, Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul condoled the death of Hassan Ariff, reports BSS.

Besides, in separate messages, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter, Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperative Adviser Asif Mahmud, Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Textiles and Jute Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin and Planning and Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud expressed profound shock and grief at the death of Adviser AF Hassan Ariff.
